The swallow is my favourite bird and not just because it is beautiful and acrobatic. Historically sailors and swallows have shared a deep connection. During the age of tall ships and lengthy sea voyages, a swallow sighting was a beacon of hope, indicating that land was near. These birds, rarely found far out at sea, were seen as signs of good fortune, signalling the end of a perilous journey.
There are many seafaring myths and legends about swallows. One such myth is that if a sailor dies are sea, a swallow is the soul being carried home. This bird is an important maritime emblem, symbolising protection and reverence for those lost at sea.
This print is of one of my collaged map and paper original pieces
